Crossdresser and Transgender Support Groups in NJ

New Jersey has several support groups for cross-dressers that meet monthly. Tri-Ess is a national educational, social, and support group for the heterosexual crossdresser, their partner, the spouse of the married crossdresser, and their families. The Sigma Nu Rho chapter serves the Trenton area. Also serving NJ and Eastern PA is The New Jersey Support Group, a nonprofit support group open to all transgender individuals, their spouses, significant others, family, and friends. In the northern part of the state a group meets in Hackensack. Hudson Pride Connection Center in Jersey City offers a series of "programs to support the needs of the transgender community through peer support, job development assistance, and education on hormone therapy, name changes, and more." In Highland Park, transgender girls from the central part of the state find support at TrueSelves which meets in the Pride Center of NJ. Trueselves is a "facilitated support group exclusively for and about transgender-identified individuals, regardless of where on the transgender spectrum you believe you live."

Crossdresser and Transgender Social Groups in NJ

Le Femme Finishing School has a meet up group and hosts monthly events for the girls in the crossdresser/transgender community and focuses on social activities that are alternatives to meeting at a bar. The Ladies Night Out Yahoo Group meets monthly in Toms River for dancing and karaoke. Ladies Night Out and About plans gatherings in restaurants and straight or gay night clubs throughout the state. While the majority of crossdressing and transgender people identify as heterosexual, often gay bars are the only place where some cross-dressers feel safe or welcome. The large number of members on NJ Crossdressers and Friends group indicates that there are more males crossdressing in NJ who are not comfortable coming out in the open.

Transgender Rights in NJ

Garden State Equality has worked tirelessly to put the transgender community and transgender rights at the forefront of the New Jersey's GLBT rights movement, for which we have also received national acclaim. In 2005, Garden State Equality ran the first television commercial in American history on trangender civil rights. The commercial aired as part of our campaign to pass a statewide transgender equality law. That law passed both houses of the New Jersey legislature by a combined vote of 102 to 8, the largest margin of victory for a transgender bill anywhere in America to this day. Later that legislative session, the legislature passed a transgender-inclusive anti-hate crimes law by a combined vote of 100 to 10.

According the Niela Miller, author of Counseling in Genderland, cross-dressing can be "like an addiction in that it masks pain and deprivation, similar to drugs, alcohol or compulsive sex". Here is an example from her book. "When I put the clothes on, I can relax and all my troubles disappear. It is my greatest pleasure and it's been the source for strong erotic feelings that help me forget the weight of my obligations."
